History

Geriatric Excellence Center was established by King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital with a mission to prepare Thai society for global aging change by promoting healthy lifestyle among older people, slowing down their degeneration, and reducing their dependency in order to enable them to live a productive life and have a better quality of life.

About us

Prof. Kearkiat Praditpornsilpa, M.d., Deputy Director of King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Medical Services and Research as a Chief of the center says “Geriatric Excellence Center provides both disease prevention and treatment for commonly found symptoms in older patients such as falls, sleep problems, vision and hearing problems, degeneration of the internal organ system, and mental care by a multidisciplinary team of specialized professionals.”

“The clinic provides an opportunity for both healthy elderly and people in other ages to acknowledge proper elderly care and create an aging-friendly attitude in Thai society.”

Furthermore, Comprehensive Geriatric Clinic has been established to promote holistic health care and to screen health problems. The clinic also facilitates a self-care plan for each individual and educates them on how to take care of themselves.

The clinic produces information resources in aging and elderly care for our community in the form of leaflets, online media, handbooks and textbooks. Our medical textbooks are initiated to be the reference book of Thailand, while the academic conference about the elderly and community collaboration are held to acknowledge proper elderly care and create an aging-friendly attitude in Thai society

Prof. Suthipong Watcharasin, M.d., Director of King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University said that if you look around, you will find one elderly (aged over 60) in every 5 people in the near future. Recognizing the importance of such situations and specialized care for the elderly, therefore, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital and Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, established the building to provide holistic care for the elderly, which was officially opened in 2015. The building was built on the auspicious occasion of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s 60th birthday anniversary and received royal grace with the name “Sor Tor Building” from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. “Sor Tor Building” is an integrated care center for the elderly, equipped with various facilities, modern medical tools, and an elder-friendly management.

Prof. Ruengreong Leelanukrom, M.d., deputy director of the service department at Chulalongkorn Hospital, said that the 18-floor Sor Tor Building has a unit providing care for the elderly in every aspect, starting from the detection of abnormal symptoms to prevent disease and slow down degeneration. There is also a health care center for older patients as well as specialized clinics located in this building, such as, Chulalongkorn Centre of Excellence for Parkinson's Disease & Related Disorders, Advanced Geriatric Rehabilitation Clinic, Excellent Center for Gait and Motion, Cognitive Fitness Center, Gender Health Clinic, etc., to be a model for holistic care for the elderly with an emphasis on health promotion and geriatric syndrome prevention in the elderly, such as, falls, choking, vision problems, hearing problems, urinary incontinence, insomnia, and depression, etc., including diabetes, high blood pressure, and high blood lipids, to make sure the elderly have better health and are able to live happily.

“Even though the Sor Tor Building is not fully open, some people who are interested in the service have come. King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital has been cooperating with the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, with the aim of producing knowledge and personnel to take care of the health of people in the country, especially to acknowledge proper elderly care. “Sor Tor Building” is therefore considered a prototype building for holistic care of the elderly.”
